Haymitch hadn’t wanted to go on that TV show to begin with. He was ex-military, it didn’t mean he got his kicks putting himself in impossible survival situations – and he had seen enough bad stuff to last him a lifetime. Plutarch Heavensbee was an old friend from his army days. The man was a politician, all in for himself and always thinking three turns ahead but he had also come through for Haymitch more times than he could count when he had been in a tight spot. Haymitch owed him. Even if Plutarch now moonlighted as a TV producer.
He had refused, at first, of course. Repeatedly.
But he owed Plutarch and Plutarch had been desperate.
He hadn’t planned on Effie Trinket.

Effie was the star of the show, jealousy was only natural and, from Viola Summercket, anything could be expected from stupid dares to tripping fellow models on the catwalk. It had been her idea to play truth and dare and she had goaded Effie until she chose something other than truth.
And now there she was, with their tipsy friends clustered on the sidewalk, watching from a safe distance while she attempted to steal a car.

Something flashed on his face, something like regret, and she wondered if he had as complicated a relationship with his father as she did with her own mother. She knew all about screwed up family dynamics.
He opened his mouth and then closed it without saying anything, his fingers drumming a nervous beat on the table.
“Can’t say I ever put a foot in a publishing house.” he said carefully. Before she could puzzle over that, he shrugged again. “I do like books though.”
