“Why didn’t you come see me at the hospital?”
“I wasn’t allowed,” Shigeo said quickly, casting his eyes downward in a feeble attempt to hide his tears in shadow. He wasn’t sure how much his brother could see in the dim light, but the moon against Ritsu’s face revealed a whole mess of things at once. The younger boy’s expression contorted with a mix of emotions, seeming equal parts eager to believe as he was unimpressed with the answer.
“That’s not what mom told me.”
