“You should be more aware of your surroundings, Ava,” Beatrice says in a gentle tone. Then she playfully adds, “or do I need to rope you in to a gym orientation?”
Breathing is simple, right? Just in and out. It’s automatic, at least that’s what her physiology classes have taught her. Something something diaphragm, something something intercostal muscles. All her professors must have lied, since Ava seems to be inhaling and exhaling at the same time. Or maybe neither?

“Have you climbed this before - uh - ?” Her voice is a bit stiff.
“Beatrice.” She tries to introduce herself gently despite the lingering staleness in the air between them. “And no, but I observed you for a moment and noticed one adjustment that may help.” Beatrice smiles with slight sheepishness.
“Ava,” the woman supplies. Ava pauses and lets the awkward energy go, like releasing a leaf into the wind. “Sure, lay it on me…Beatrice.”

Summary
It makes heat burn up Beatrice's face the first time she rises early, fingers thrumming with anger and desperate to hold a bow, and comes upon Mary and Sister Shannon, cloistered in the entrance to Sister Shannon's room. There's nothing untoward about it, per se, a perfectly respectable distance between them, but Sister Shannon's hair is mussed with sleep and Mary's looking at her like she hung the stars in the sky and it's all too much for her.

Summary
Before she can stop herself, Ava reaches out as if to grab Beatrice’s elbow. She catches herself before she makes contact, knowing that while she’s in this stranger’s body Beatrice would probably have her flat on her back in two seconds, and not in a good way. But even as her hand retracts itself, words tumble from her lips.
“Bea, I—”
Beatrice spins around. “How do you know my name?”
Eyes wide, Ava stammers, “I—I don’t.” They stare at each other. Then, “Be safe. I was going to say, ‘be safe.’”
Or,
5 times Ava returns to Beatrice in this life, and 1 time they return to each other in the next.

Faith has never come easy to Beatrice-- it always was a business, a honed skill, a shield against the empty lonely childhood and a grating aching adolescence shunted out of sight by her disappointed parents-- but she’s had faith in Ava since the minute they stood outside of a tomb in the Vatican catacombs and Beatrice realized that she brought the dynamite as a backup to Ava out of habit instead of actual worry. She’d always known Ava would do what they needed, would succeed and find her way through her own fear, and Ava hadn’t disappointed her.
Michael came back. Lilith came back. Ava hasn’t disappointed her yet, and she won’t start now.
