“Any rules,” you breathe.
He laughs, quick and through his teeth.
“You follow too many rules.”
Ryland’s hand rests on the counter, fingers twitching in crumbling restraint.
“I come in and interrupt you because I like to think that someday, I may get you to crack.”
Your response is just a breath of air, because what do you even say to that?
“We’re colleagues,” you say stupidly.
“You know there’s something more there. I know it too. I’m not an idiot.”

“Why are you asking about that right now?”
“Because I want to know.”
“Are you jealous?” you ask, eyebrows raising high on your face at the revelation.
You notice the tic of his jaw, despite his face staying neutral.
“You are, aren’t you?”
You lean up on your elbows, leveling your shoulders and looking up at him through your lashes. He takes a deep breath, shoulders rising and falling with the exhale.
“Six. You know the job.”
His hand comes to rest on your ankle, swirling absent patterns as his gaze rests somewhere on the ugly shag carpet below. You notice the tremble in his fingers, restraint.
“Did you feel like this with him?” he asks again.
“What do you think?” you ask, just to egg him on.
His eyes meet yours, dark as sin. Unwavering want threatening to spill over. Six tilts his head to the side and presses a kiss to your ankle, right next to his fingers.
“Why not go back to him then?”
“Think you can do any better?”

You look at him, hands resting on his waist, fingers tilting the whiteboard marker back and forth as he waits. His face is expectant, eyebrows drawn upwards. Tilting your shoulders back, you take a breath and repeat it back to him.
“The four major elements for this are Hydrogen, Carbon, Nitrogen and Oxygen.”
He nods.
“Then there’s the uh, the principle.”
“Yes, Aufbau.”
“Aufbau. Lower orbitals working up to higher orbitals. Two electrons to each.”
“Very good,” he praises, voice finding that softness again.
You smile.
“See? You’re learning.”
You’re failing Organic Chemistry and sign up for a tutor with the only slot open - Ryland Grace.

Just making sure I am understanding,” you start, laying your hands flat on the cool marble table. “You want to map out certain points of each other's bodies for science?”
“It’s information!”
“For?”
He looks at you then, glasses resting on the middle of his nose as he sighs.
“The science community.”
“That’s not a good answer.”
“How is it not?”
“You’re not giving me a persuasive argument to believe.”
He huffs again, fingers stopping mid-twirl as he thinks.
“At least give me something, so I don’t feel as bad telling you no.”
He has a hint of a smile on his lips as he speaks again.
“Hypothetically speaking-”
You nod, encouraging him to go on, despite already knowing where this was going. You’ve known him long enough to catch his tells. He’s already getting defensive, so you know something’s up.
“I need a body to map for my physiology course, or I’m failing this semester.”
Or, Ryland waits until deadline to complete his project for physiology and asks for your help.
