Summary
Mike sat with El at the table, enjoying a milkshake. Except his eyes were wondering around the room for Will. He had left a few moments ago from their table but hasn't returned. Not that Mike cared. Until he saw a tall, blonde haired boy standing close to his friend. The two were smiling as they were indulged in conversation. He was too close, Mike didn't like it. "Who's that? With Will?" He asked, trying to hide the hint of bitterness in his tone. "Oh. I dunno." El replied.

What happened at rink-o-mania but instead of the El/Angela drama, a cute boy decides to help Will enjoy his forgotten birthday. And Mike, who is still annoyed from their argument moments ago, doesn't like what he's seeing.

Summary
“You want us to foster a kid?” Mike finally asks, disbelieving. Will is half convinced that El will laugh in their faces, clearing up the misunderstanding with a, “No, silly. I want you to water my plants.”
“It doesn’t have to be forever,” El says. “Just until I can find another home for him. I can’t stand him living in the shelter anymore. Not right now. He needs emotional support. And don’t lie to me— I know you two have been wanting kids. This can be a trial run.”
—
Will and Mike are tasked with fostering an emotionally distant, judgmental, sassy twelve-year-old boy from El’s shelter. As hard as they try to win his heart, they seem to be making no progress. After all, how could two strangers earn the trust of a boy who’s been hurt time and time again?

Summary
Will bites his lip and nods, looking down at his shoes again so Richie won't see how hard he's holding back a giddy smile.
Everybody in the party knows everything about him. Maybe it wouldn't be the worst thing to keep a secret from Mike for a little while.
It's kind of exciting. Sneaking in a boy Mike hates.
Will shakes his head, trying to clear Mike from it for the night. Only when he looks back up at Richie, Richie has this conspiratorial smile on his face, like maybe Will isn't the only one eager to piss off Mike Wheeler.
OR: the concept of Richie Tozier being Will Byers' dirty little secret and Mike Wheeler being so jealous he can't breathe. Byler endgame.

Summary
The party has since gone their separate ways, with all roads leading far away from Hawkins.
Except for Mike. For two years, he's stewed in his childhood bedroom, tapping uselessly away at his dusty typewriter. Will has been the only one who kept in touch, sending him letters, paired with the occasional call.
Mike has clung to this- clung to him.
At the start of summer break, he flies down to New York City, a CD filled with words he couldn't bear to say himself stuffed in his luggage.
Will has changed. Mike hasn't.
At least that's what they believe.
OR,
Mike visits Will over summer break, and they spend a week living together in a dorm.

Summary
Mason hates school.
He thinks that everyone must hate school a little bit; the other kids at the shelter complained about it enough. But Mason hates school more than the others. Sometimes it’s alright. Sometimes he even likes it, when his foster homes are particularly unbearable. It’s a nice escape.
Times like this though, where he doesn’t really mind going back to the house, it’s torture.
