Summary
Blisters have begun to form on my hand from gripping the bag's strap too tightly. The sign is in gold, just four steps in front of me. The hard part should be over- leaving my father, taking the bus, finding my way here- but the stairs leading to the golden letters seem impossible to climb. The concrete below my feet has a magnetic pull, dragging me down into the earth.
What is he doing in there, so close I feel I’m breathing again into his neck? He could be having a nice night with the old man, one I will undoubtedly ruin. Or perhaps he’s miserable, and the sight of me will set him over the edge. I still see the most likely outcome being the painting promptly ripped out of my hands and a door slamming in my face. I gnaw at my thumbnail, my leg trembling, wanting to bounce up and down in my shoe. Just go in. Just go in.
Quickly, so I don’t have time to stop myself, I run up the steps and start rapping at the door.

Summary
Now might be a good time to make the trip to Desert End, Boris thinks. If anyone still lives there, they might let him look around. Or, more likely, wouldn’t take much notice of someone sitting in a car and staring at their house. But Boris doesn’t think it would be a good idea to see that sidewalk, or the window into the bedroom, where the painting used to live. Maybe it would be a better idea to get in his car and head back into town.
Boris remembers an afternoon.

Summary
Seeing him here, in New York, surrounded by the deep browns and golds of Hobart and Blackwell, is so alien to me I have to repress the urge to pinch myself like a child would after a dream. It looks incorrect, him standing here. Like someone has taken a pair of scissors to my memories of him, cut him out of his rightful place on the abandoned playground, and pasted him sloppily into a corner of my life where he doesn’t belong. Has it only been a few weeks? It feels like ages longer, like it’s been a decade, like we’re different people trying to see what exactly we liked about each other so much way back when.
But then he says it again- “Potter.”- and that feeling vanishes as quickly as it arrived.
“You came,” I say dumbly.
He gives a cheery smirk that I don’t believe. “Promised I would.”

Summary
There’s a boy in his English class.
New, like him. (He knows this because no one talks to him, either.) He sits in front of Boris, one seat to the right, so it’s easy to make out his gloomy face. And Boris doesn’t know what it is about the boy that intrigues him so much- it could be the fact that when he does speak in class, rarely, the things he says are some of the only things Boris has ever heard in a classroom that make sense. It could be the fact that he looks like Harry Potter, with his shaggy hair and big round glasses. Or that he never, ever smiles.

Summary
Several years after Amsterdam, Hobie is woken up in the middle of the night by Theo stumbling home with his friend Boris. A snapshot of their relationship from Hobie's POV.
"Hobie watched, somewhat in shock, as Theo, who in general eschewed any forms of physical affection, particularly he’d noted, with other men, leaned in close to Boris, the two of them sharing a long moment of eye contact, Theo looking grave and Boris faintly amused, before Theo sighed and lay his head down to rest on Boris’s shoulder."

Summary
In the hotel elevator, he stared at himself in the endless mirror. Thin man (Bob Dylan chords) in black coat, with little white dog. His nose was red from coke. Eyes red from maybe something else.

Summary
Sometimes Boris wishes he knew how long he had left with Theo before he left to return to New York, maybe he would’ve done things differently—but it wouldn’t have changed the way he fell in love with him.
In other words; the occasions on which Boris realises he loves Theo, and there’s absolutely nothing he can do about it.

Summary
There were many nights Boris remembers that Theo doesn’t--always a gulf between them, these things unacknowledged. Boris would always know more about Potter than Potter would know about him. There would always be the sound of sobs echoing in Boris’s ears, always the vodka-soaked late night admissions, the jumping off the roof, the blood spattering on the tiles. Always the feeling of Potter’s breath hot against his neck as he said “she called me Puppy sometimes” and then, always Boris allowing himself to whisper tsutsenya later when the dust and rubble tore Theo’s mother away in his dreams and brought Potter gasping back to reality in Boris’s arms.
There would always be the night Potter showed him the painting.
“You’re a blackout drunk, Potter, you know that?”
or, Boris tries to remember why he took it
