Carol hasn’t exerted herself enough to justify the bright red flush that spreads across her cheeks and down her chest when Zosia’s words hit her. She opens her mouth to respond, to say anything, but the only thing that stumbles out is a pathetic noise that falls somewhere between a whine and a whimper.
