Summary
When Nicolò walks home from working in the orchards, pockets filled with the fruits Yusuf likes best, he passes by the large church in town. Sometimes he’ll stop outside for a while, listening to the sounds of bells and singing from within. He does not go inside.
Nicolò is no stranger to longing, so he recognizes the sensation when he feels it, bone-deep and lethal.

With a watery smile, Joe told her about the crusades and their many happy years together. He spoke of his Nicky’s kindness, his spirit. As his voice trailed off, Andy stepped in to explain the ‘44 mission, the Alps, the train, the explosion, the twisted sword they found in the rubble. Booker sat quietly. They were leaving out a few parts, he knew. Joe wading through the snow and ash for days, losing thirteen fingers and succumbing to hypothermia five times before they could finally tear his tired body away from the wreckage. Joe’s despair, anger, and grief. The years Andy and Booker spent occasionally checking up on Joe as he made his pilgrimage: Jeaureslum, Genoa, Tunis, Hanoi, Paris, Cuba, San Francisco, Malta. They didn’t tell Nile that the longsword Joe carries on his hip was reforged by Italian blacksmiths in the ‘70s.
The team believes they lost Nicky over 70 years ago, but Nile’s dreams tell a different story.

Nicolò looks up at him sharply, then, eyes bright. “Never,” he says firmly, “Not when it comes to this.”
I love you, Yusuf thinks. I’ve loved you for so long.
It’s a thought Yusuf has often. By now, he’s used to pushing it aside.

A little light of understanding turns on behind Nicky's eyes, loosening his frown. He gives Joe a tiny hint of a smile, and makes a little show of looking him up and down.
'Sure,' he says, 'Let's say it's the hair.'
Joe's stressed, and looking to relax. Nicky would love to help him do that.

“Aha! I know just the tale,” Yusuf finally says, slapping the bed victoriously. “And I will bet it is even funnier than the one you just told.” Nicolò’s smile widens at that. Yusuf knows he can’t resist a good bet.
“What would be the prize for winning?” Nicolò asks, lifting one brow at Yusuf who grins at him, the kind of grin that makes his eyes crinkle at the corners. Nicolò loves him desperately.
“Suppose a kiss will do?” Yusuf asks. Nicolò pretends to think about it.
“I suppose so… though it will have to be a good one.”

One night, a few months after they first become lovers, Yusuf and Nicolò make a game out of which one of them can tell a funnier story about a past flame. However, the mood of their evening changes as Nicolò slowly notices that the story Yusuf starts telling is much darker than he seems to realize himself.
