Summary
By the end of his speech, tears are falling from Buck’s chin to where his hands are still stuck, half-reaching out for Tommy’s. “I’m so sorry,” Buck whispers, with his stupid big eyes and his stupid big heart and of course he looks absolutely gutted, because he’s never felt anything but the full weight of everyone else’s emotions, “I had no idea. You never told me.”
“I didn’t tell you a lot of things,” Tommy says, “And I regret it. I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay,” Buck assures him, a tinge of desperation on his tongue, “I—I—I forgive you. I wasn’t there for the first bit, but I’m here now, and—and whatever you need, whatever the—the baby needs, I’ll do it.”
“You’re gonna be such a good dad,” Tommy smiles, and this is the part he knew was going to hurt. This is the part he almost couldn’t stomach. This is the part he knows he has to do more than anything else. “That’s why I’m relinquishing parental rights. The baby’s going to be yours—just yours.”
