“Damon Maitsu,” his teacher says sternly, a bushy eyebrow curled up.“You're paired with Kai Monteago.”
“Oh. Okay.” That's a relief. Not in trouble then. Just the pairings for another assignment. No big deal.
A second after his relief, it hits him.
Kai? That’s— His head whips around to the back of the classroom where sure enough, in the corner of the room just one chair shy of the back — one Kai Monteago sits, absentmindedly staring out the window, faded pink hair almost halo-like when framed by golden light. When he catches sight of Damon, his eyes widen for a second, but quickly avert themselves, staring back outside... he’s flushed, yet feigning calm — obviously ignoring him.
In any other scenario, the entire scene would feel almost romantic, but all Damon feels is a growing sense of dread.
