Summary
“Do you ever wish you were different, like, I don’t know if you were a boy or something, or if you couldn’t love.” The question pierces through the silence, escaping Haley’s mouth with a flavor of uncertainty. The farmer pauses her movements.
The woman awkwardly chuckles, “I can’t say I have. I love every part of me that makes me a woman and every part of me that experiences love. I think it’s one of the most beautiful things on Earth. I couldn’t imagine not being able to love yo-” she catches herself. “I couldn’t imagine being unable to love someone.”
The farmer reaches for her hand, her calloused palms clashing lovingly against Haley’s recently moisturized skin.
“Do you wish things were different?” she quietly asks. Haley finally looks up at her, a tear managing to escape out of the far corner of her right eye.
Haley chuckles. For the first time all night, she’s shown an emotion other than regret. She smiles. “I swear I had an answer to give you,” she says, smiling.
The farmer smiles back, “Well, what the hell happened?” She laughs.
Haley’s eyes dart from her lips to her eyes, a slow, yet telling, motion. She wipes her glassy eyes, “You.”
