Summary
Max had hoped that she would never encounter another choice like the one in Arcadia Bay. A choice that felt like it would change life as she knew it and, once again, drastically shift the outcome of her unwritten future. She never wanted to bear that responsibility again, not after the devastation it wrought last time.
Yet here she was again, standing on that precipice, staring the arbiter of her unwoven future directly in the eye.
And if nothing else, she could at least take comfort in the fact that the two paths laid out before her were far, far less deadly than the last.

Summary
Because this place, these people—they were all she had now, and she would be damned if she lost it all to a sickness that she could easily overcome.
So she ignored the intensifying pain in her chest, disregarded the way her body felt like it was set ablaze for her every waking moment, and wrote off the thick, yellow phlegm she started coughing up around day four as a triviality. A mere inconvenience rather than a dire warning of a deeper issue.
It would pass, she thought, and repeated it over and over to herself, day in and day out, like a mantra.
It would pass.

Summary
Gwen blinked, and only then did she notice her blurred vision and wet cheeks. She clenched her jaw hard and tried to get ahold of herself, to reign her wildly fluctuating thoughts and emotions in before she lost control, but it was too late.
The water was already climbing her legs and dragging her body below the raging waves, submerging her whole in the cold, caliginous sea. Her lungs restricted painfully in her chest from the lack of oxygen, chest burning with an internalized agony that was viciously fighting to reach the surface. The feeling was both frightening and familiar. She knew what happened next, and she couldn’t stop it. She could do nothing but succumb and let her body go limp.
It always stunned her how much harder it was to see the light of the sun when you’re sinking steadily to the bottom of the ocean.

Gwen unknowingly gets sent on a mission to Earth-65 on the anniversary of Peter's death. It doesn't go well, but Miles is there to help in the aftermath.

Summary
In a lot of ways, Gwen would liken herself to a volcano, with the seemingly never-ending amount of pressure building up within her, waiting and begging to be released. Except there was no magnificent uproar of destruction with which she could expel that pressure, it just kept building and building and she had no choice but to continue bottling it and carrying it on her shoulders wherever she went.
She was waiting for some kind of reprieve, but it never came, and her hope for it dwindled with every bruise she gained, every barrel she had to stare down, and every curse thrown her way from the people she fought to protect.
Life took more than it gave, Gwen was acutely aware of that, but with each passing day, it seemed like the universe had no more to give.

Gwen's journey within the gaps between ITSV and what we see of her in ATSV because it's worth exploring.
