Lance is six years old in this story and Keith is about thirty-five. Lance’s mom (Allura) is a heroin addict. Lance stays home from school because when she gets high and insensate it’s terrifying for him because he doesn’t understand what’s happening. Keith is on the Sex Offenders Registry and Allura didn’t know or realize when she moved them in. Since she is a heroin addict and she moved them to avoid CPS getting in their business about Lance’s truancy, she didn’t have a lot of options for their new apartment.
