JJ's eyes are Ellie's favourite thing.
Two deep brown galaxies, always so full of wonder and an immense affection she never deserved.
They'd look up and watch her intently—like she was something so important. Like she held the moon and the stars and his future in her hands.
It's terrifying.
Was terrifying.
She misses his eyes, and how they swam in the sunlight to create a new colour. How they sparkled when Dina spoke to him in a way that made him laugh.
She can never get them right on paper. And she tries. And tries.
His laugh used to be so clear in her mind.

Ellie returns to Jackson. And shovels the snow in Dina's yard, every day.

However, still haunted by PTSD, nightmares, and the unknown willingness of her family to forgive her, she walks into the unknown and tries to learn how to heal.

Dina's here.
She hadn’t planned for that. Dina’s here and Ellie is in Joel’s bed. She breathes shakily and turns her head into the pillow, breathing him in and gasps because it still smells the same. Fingers clutch desperately at the pillow as her tears stain it and her lip wobbles and she feels fourteen again. Fourteen and afraid but its fine because Joel’s here and Joel protects her.
But he’s not here, and she’s slowly learning that that’s ok.
