He drags Penelope, playfully, into an Oracle’s tent tucked at the edge of the carnival, yet another small attempt to coax a laugh from her. The Oracle offers a strange tea, claiming it will reveal their future. Everyone finds it ridiculous, amusing. Benedict drinks it easily.
What he sees in the candlelight shakes him to his core: Penelope, not as his brother’s fiancée, but as his wife. In his bed. In his arms. Moaning his name like it belongs to her alone. A life with her, so vivid it feels like memory.
When he returns to himself, heart pounding, he realizes, from the way Penelope is staring at him, wide-eyed and scarlet-faced, that she saw it too.
