    Natalie scanned the crowd, eyes sweeping over teammates, faculty, random classmates who showed up for the free pizza and drama.

    Somewhere in the back row, Kevin was standing with his hands in his pockets.

    He always showed up, even when she didn’t ask him to.

    Sometimes she wished he was her soulmate.

    It would make things easier.

    Predictable. Clean.

    But then a flash of brown caught her eye.

    Shauna.

    Smiling.

    Not the faint polite one she gave teachers or Jackie’s parents—this one was
    wide, easy, real.

    Her whole face lit up like she forgot to be tired for once.

    It was strange, seeing her like that.

    Jackie hugged her then, tight. Like Shauna might slip away if she didn’t hold on hard enough.

    And Shauna leaned into it.

    Looked at her like Jackie had hung the moon.

    Natalie knew she looked for a second too long.

    She didn’t know why.

    Didn’t know what that was.

    Just that it settled in her ribs like a bruise she didn’t remember getting.
