She didn't mean to intrude, never does, but the two of them kissing gently is more breathtaking than maybe even space.

Maybe no one knows how to do this part yet. Maybe no one is really as evil as all the big big grown ups in River’s past.

Summary
Come back tomorrow,” she says while playing ineffectively at being busy putting glass bottles away and wiping up a sticky finger of melted mango. River loves her, heart swooping even as she understands the careful order and way Inara doesn’t love her yet loves her completely.

Summary
“Slow down,” Inara says like she hadn’t just checked both corners and asked for the girl to speed.
“If I slow down you will think of the wrong client,” River says and Inara shuts her mind instantly.

Summary
[She] doubles down; sees nothing but metal metal metal for so long that when she looks up the landscape has changed, just slightly. It takes almost two years to work to a point where she looks behind her and sees another two people, standing good boy tall and grumbling about how hard River is working. They tell her they worked hard because she had, they tell her they are working hard to keep up with her. When she goes back to her room the space around her feels huge and empty for the first time in years.
River Tam and truths about the interior of a maze, the interior of an institution.

Summary
“I don’t know how to put this down, it’s too much for me,” River says and Inara knows both how she feels and that she shouldn’t have pushed the girl into her chair like she was going to stand over her.
“I can’t keep on being me if you won’t be you,” River says and Inara hates her fully, knows it’s true but can’t stop remembering her throwing herself into the hole after the Reaver’s. Can’t stop seeing her as the monster.
“I’ll never tell,” River says and Inara pries her name from behind her teeth.

Summary
[She] feels it even before it hits her tongue like she’s already flinching. She runs back to Serenity, her boots laced too tightly on one side but not enough to force her to stop. The black, she forgot about it in a blissful moment of being upwards. It felt like climbing out of her own grave, it felt like scaling the walls in escape.

Summary
Gravity is something she possesses a lot of and to both let herself fall away from it and use it at its critical point enables them to meet in the middle, eyes as dark as the glass behind them and breath warm and shared. River doesn’t know what size she needs to be but when Inara sighs against her ear, her neck, she grows big enough to carry them both tumbling, grows big enough to take Inara’s tired hungry weight against her own body.
They flatten the space around themselves and minuscule the deck. They don’t look at the door and don’t listen to the engine and instead pull themselves so tall that they’d brush the starlight off their shoulders through inattention alone.

Summary
A body like that surely couldn’t forget, muscles holding memory of violence the way Inara’s holds memory of pleasure. She wants to watch her dance. She wants to watch her fight. She wants her hands running up and down the soft skin of her legs until they part for her. She has no more room inside her for the denseness of the secrecy she feels about it.

Summary
They are laughing and telling her to laugh in one, so she steals the nothing from their eyes like knowledge from the source and the screaming continues until they poke her too hard and the pain is as small and complete as the hole of a star. The machines around her grow sharp and the data on the screen is catalogued. The edges of the light that put her shadow on the wall behind her become visible to her and she sits still as she learns to see both in front and behind her at once. She forgets that there is a sky.

Summary
She looks up straight again. What perfect make-up, how pretty her eyes behind the slightest screen of her loose hair. The swish of Ms. De Brún's hand as she wishes them carpe diem is elegant. It's a new kind of word to Orla. Elegant. It sits like red wine. It makes her ankles feel cold.

Let's blame this on extended absence from sense. Don't y'all look at me like that, this is the best pairing the show ever gave us.

Summary
She remembers being nine and snapping all of Wynonna’s cigarettes in two, remembers running the tobacco between her fingers trying to find traces of their father in the flat smell of it. She goes back to bed and sucks until the taste of whiskey is gone, thoughts flashing to Nicole as it sits heavy on her tongue.
tl;dr
Waverly Earp, a study in salt.
