The rain fell against the high windows in restless patterns, lending a rhythmic background sound and a muted autumnal feeling to the scratching of quills and the turning of parchment in the class.
Albus stood at the blackboard, finishing a delicate theoretical demonstration: a shimmering transfiguration of water into a delicate glass hummingbird.
Then, from just behind him, a clear voice cut through the calm.
“Professor…may I ask a question?”
Albus turned, already too familiar with that tone. Riddle sat with his head slightly inclined to the side, his quill poised just above the parchment, as though arrested by a sudden thought.
A perfect show of an innocent, academic inquiry.
Albus’s wariness deepened. Long since had he stopped mistaking this boy’s manner for sincerity.

“Running away?” Aegon poses leisurely, leaning against the headboard. Jace can see the glint of teeth when Aegon grins, even in the shadows. “You’re good at that.”
The barb hits right where Aegon wants it to. Jace tries not to let it, but it sneaks under his skin nonetheless, just like Aegon has. Jace wonders when he’ll be able to cut this away. To finish it. He likes things like that. Something with a very clear start and end. Aegon isn’t like that. He’s a cluster of emotion, a mosaic of broken things stitched together that changes in a heartbeat.
It unsettles him, even as it intrigues him.
“There’s nothing to run from,” Jace replies.
Or: Jace fights to be the perfect son, and Aegon wants to drag him down to the depths of depravity with him.
