“Why are you telling me this?” He whispered.
“Because every appointment, you bring with you a notebook and ask me how it is improving, what needs to be changed, how Max is changing. I am telling you this now so in five years when you are angry with me that nothing has changed yet, you understand. This is Max, Charles. I’m so sorry”

Summary

To protect them from retaliation, they are placed under witness protection and moved across the country to pose as a married couple.
