Isabella's song, as he had known it to be, had been one he wasn't aware of the origins. She'd never explained it to him; all he knew was that it meant a lot to her.
She used to hum it for him in the dead of night when he'd wake in a cold sweat with tears on his cheeks. Now, in her final moments, she chose to use all of her strength to sing it for him once again.

And then Emma found herself questioning how much more of herself would she need to forget to get them to laugh a little louder. How much of herself she would change to get them to smile a little wider. It horrified her, just how willing she was to destroy everything she’d ever been to please them. ‘How much more do they need from me?’ somewhere along the line became ‘how much more do they want?’
The person she had built out of nothing over these past two years seemed so insignificant now. The girl who had dealt with lonely nights all alone with no idea of who she had been or would ever be. The curiosity she had cultivated from somewhere in the remains of her soul, the determination she had dragged back from the depths of her mind— all of that work to make herself into someone she could be proud of meant nothing. Because Emma loved those strangers that were supposed to be her family more than herself and it was terrifying.
