Summary
"What's your name?"
He realizes what a stupid question this is almost immediately after he asks it. Either the man will lie, or he won't reply at all. The stranger opts for the latter, giving him a look of annoyance that's edged with warning. Despite himself, Sanji's a little offended that he's not even granted a fake name.
"Ask something else," the man grunts. Sanji supposes he should be pleased that the stranger is willing to talk at all. He isn't terribly experienced with men, but this guy doesn't exactly seem the social type.
A restaurant chef taking a smoke break finds a wounded underworld assassin bleeding out in the rain. Obviously the normal thing is to bring him inside, right?

Summary
The drug works fast. In minutes the pirate’s eyes are glazing over and the killing intent dissipates. Smoker is close enough to see Roronoa's pupils constrict, showing the steel-grey of his eyes.
He makes himself watch it completely. The light in Roronoa’s gaze flickers, still fighting fiercely and for a moment there is a spark of recognition as he looks at him. Smoker lets the shame of it burn through him as he watches a man drown and do nothing.
Smoker had read the reports on Sabaody. Straw Hat’s crew escaped, save for the swordsman. There were no reports about his death, Tashigi said, nor was there a record of incarceration in Impel Down.
Two years later, Roronoa Zoro appears on his ship with his handler.

Summary
Holding his gaze, Zoro ran his thumb across Luffy's scar, the one under his eye that was pale and sharp and raised. The left eye, like his own. The prince allowed the touch, and they held each other tightly in the clearing until Zoro stopped trembling and his mind cleared a little, the ripple of shame dying into a still pond.
“I need your help.”
“Anything. ” The word fell easily from the prince’s lips, and Zoro suppressed an urge to cover his mouth. Brown eyes looked at him, wide and sincere, and a little fear leapt in his heart.
A demon hunter is ensnared by the Faerie King, healed by the Ghost Princess, and rescued by the Sun Prince.

Summary
John fired the gun and shattered time.
Reality crystallised around the wake of the bullet, fragmenting inwards, as though it was puncturing layers upon layers of mirrors, the shards tearing outwards in new leaves. It slowed. Stopped in the air, an inch away from Santino’s forehead. Santino smiled, swallowing his food, dabbing his mouth. John stared, taking a step back. Winston’s hand was outstretched. Frozen, like everyone else was frozen, in the middle of turning, in the middle of eating, drinking. Breathing.

Summary
Santino always woke up struggling for air. The walls of his cell closing in, crushing him into the present. He was shaky as he got to his feet, closing his eyes, stretching out his hands. He counted the steps to the opposite wall. Then he walked until his back was to the cell door, and counted the steps to the next well. He pressed his head against concrete, breathing in, then out. The walls snapped back into place, appeased by ritual. Santino lay back on his bed, folding his hands over his chest.
Prison stank.
It was an unrelenting stink of men crowded into tiny cells for the rest of their lives. Sweat, flatulence, body odour, vomit. Prison perfume. Santino breathed it in. Out. Choked it down. It grounded him in the mornings. People were beginning to stir. Everyone was quiet, save for those who murmured greetings to their neighbours, the words shredded away through concrete.

Summary
Abram sighed. “What we want to know is. How are things. With the boy.”
The boy. John frowned slightly. He had left The Boy, as Abram liked to refer to him, occupying the living room of the new house, surrounded by textbooks, pointedly ignoring John. “Fine.”
“What do you mean ‘fine’?” Abram asked, grimacing. “Do I want to know?”
“Abram,” Viggo growled.
“He’s still alive?” John wasn’t sure what he was meant to say.
Abram paled. “What? What did… John. When the D’Antonio family proposed this… arrangement to us in exchange for permission to act against one of the Camorra affiliated operations in New York, we guaranteed Santino D’Antonio’s continued good health in your hands. He’s what, nineteen? Eighteen? Only a boy.”
“He’s not hurt,” John said, even more puzzled now. “Studying for something, I think. We don’t talk.”

Summary
“With you it’s always ‘Father this’, ‘Father that’.” Gianna sniffed. “It’s an obnoxious habit. Very childish. Act your age.”
“Oh? And trying to interrupt a stranger about his business isn’t obnoxious?”
“You’re such an asshole,” Gianna said, incredulous. “I can’t believe you said that. We’re trying to save a life.”
“If you were remotely interested in charity of that nature you wouldn’t be in the family business.”
The stranger was staring at them now, blinking owlishly. It wasn’t an unfamiliar reaction to anyone exposed to his sister and their quarrels. “Do you guys mind?” he said finally. His voice was rusty, seldom used.

Summary
Aurelio, to his credit, actually managed ten minutes of small talk before sheer curiosity got the better of him. “Heard you’re pregnant.”
John raised his eyebrows. He had been carefully stacking the cases Santino had previously confiscated from Aurelio on the workbench. “Do I look pregnant?”
“I don’t mean you literally,” Aurelio said, making no move towards the cases. The mechanic was leaning against the car he had been working on when John had wandered into the chopshop: a badly battered antique Jaguar, hoisted up on a cherry picker. He wiped his hands on a rag, dark hair plastered to head by sweat, the fluorescent bars in the chopshop giving his skin a bluish tint. “None of my business, but. I gotta ask. Did you guys uh. Fall in lurrve somehow, like, they say, there’s a thin line between love and hatred and—”
John stared pointedly across the workshop, and Aurelio’s assistants began making a show of being busy on tasks, shuffling off out of sight. “No,” John said. “It’s not compulsory.”
