Thoma almost fell back in surprise. He stared at the spot, thinking it to be some large insect that had found its way inside the plant. Yet as he drew closer, his eyes widened. It wasn't an insect, or a disease. It was a tiny hand. For a few seconds, all Thoma could do was watch as fingers thin as rice grains gripped onto the side of the stump. A second hand joined the first, and then at last, a little face appeared.
