Summary
Nezuko is not a man. She does not have muscles from carrying coal down the mountain path. She does not have callouses from chopping wood. She does not shoulder the burden of being the eldest son of the Kamado family.
Nezuko is just a woman. Instead of carrying coal, she treads the mountain to pick wild vegetables. Instead of chopping wood, she cracks her skin open in the cold river water as she does laundry. Instead of being the eldest son, she is the eldest daughter.
But life is like the weather, always changing. When happiness ends, there’s always the smell of blood in the air. So Nezuko will shoulder the burden of the eldest son when he cannot; the eldest Kamado daughter is determined to preserve her family—what little left of it there is.
Even if her only family is now a demon.

Giyuu remembers this: the scent of blood, thick and heady, inside of the dark closet. So much fear that his heart feels like it’s about to sputter out.
No matter what, do not come out, his sister says. Promise me, Giyuu!
The small boy, all tears and snot, jerks his head in a nod.
And then she takes a knife and slashes her wrist. Lets the blood pour onto the furniture, the bedding. Smears him in red. Wraps him in her white wedding kimono and tucks him into the closet.
