The reporter stammers, her cheeks flushing. “Ah, well, I … that’s, um …” She coughs awkwardly and tries to regain her composure. “I’m glad you and your girlfriend had a nice time.”
Charles’ smile vanishes instantly. His shoulders stiffen, and his brows draw together in a look of pure frustration. “Girlfriend?” He repeats, his voice rising slightly. “He’s not — I mean, Maxie is not a-” He stops himself, visibly fuming.
“Well,” the reporter continues nervously, sensing his irritation but clearly not understanding it. “It’s great to hear that you had a fun break together! Sounds like things are going very well for you two.”
“No,” Charles snaps, his accent thickening with his growing exasperation. “You don’t understand. Maxie is-”
“-a very lucky woman, I’m sure!” The reporter cuts in quickly, trying to steer the conversation back to safer ground. “Now, let’s talk about the upcoming race …”

“Non, cheri. That is not what I mean.” Charles had replied. His eyes had looked so sincere, so earnest. “There are things about me that you do not know.”
Max’s breath had caught in his lungs. ‘Things like what?’
The question must have been clear as day on Max’s face because Charles inhaled deeply. His face contorted into a grimace. He exhaled slowly. Then breathed out the words, “Max, I am a vampire.”
And Max had laughed, of course he had, a hollow and mirthless thing. Why had he laughed?
