    Summary

“No,” the man was saying, dishevelled, taking in his surroundings. “No, no, no, not another graveyard. All the same, cemeteries - or are they? No, they’re not. Well, maybe they are.” This, because his gaze had fallen on Susan. “Hullo! Lost someones too?”

Later, Susan could never explain why she’d felt no fear. Once, in long-ago Kensington Gardens, she had stopped to watch raindrops fall into a pond while Father explained how the widening circles were really waves, carrying the droplet’s energy outward across the surface. Susan had merely seen a door open and a man in a bow tie step out — yet somehow one threshold had reached out to another, to a dim sense of crossing into another landscape, very cold and very beautiful.

(When she told the Doctor about this, all he said was, “Ponds will stand you well.”)
