"I must leave," Michaela says, a finality.
"You could stay," Francesca says, dimply optimistic.
Michaela smiles and kisses her cheek. It is about as pointless as asking the clouds to remain rooted to their place in the heavens. The next morning, the sky is a clear, ringing blue, and the windows bear nary a streak from the rain. The sun soaks the air in ways that beg anyone to step outside and enjoy its warmth. Francesca does not leave the house.
