He looks at her incredulously. “Maya,” he says softly, “there is no girlfriend.”
A beat of silence passes between them, and then two, and then three, and then Maya can’t take it anymore. “Oh.”
“Yeah.”
“Well.” Maya shifts her weight, looking everywhere but his face. “I’m sorry it didn’t work out.”
Josh quirks his lips. “No, I mean there was never a girlfriend. I went on dates here and there, but...” he shrugs. “Nothing ever stuck.”

Summary
It's been two years of a constant back and forth with Nick, and Luke in the moments in-between, and Julie is at a point where things can't keep going like this. It's just another one of her breakups when Julie calls Luke, but spending the night with him opens her eyes to different things - to herself, mostly. In order to move from the stagnant, unwelcome place in her life, Julie needs to figure out what it is that she wants.
And knowing that does nothing to sorting the mess inside her head, her heart, and the feelings she's been afraid to admit to herself.
