George blinked and watched, feeling his numbness start to fade and reveal a familiar old pattern behind it. Of course, he knew what Paul was on about. But he didn’t know how.
Paul gave a final, defeated breath, still moving his gaze back and forth, not knowing whether to hide his feelings again or commit to revealing the mess inside. George could see tears shimmer, catching just in his eyelashes. The familiar pattern.
“Linda hasn’t had any friends like John. Sh-she doesn’t understand.”
Oh. Paul didn’t have anyone to talk to.
