    ray sets the glass down next to her, and that finally seems to pull her out of her train of thought. her pencil stops against the page, and she frowns down at the storyboard in front of her. “i’m not thirsty.”

    that, ray knows, isn’t true. she just can’t feel that she’s thirsty. “drink it anyway. for me?”

    those words, for me, change something entirely in gerard’s demeanor. her whole body freezes up, and her eyes dart to meet ray’s. it occurs to him how small she looks hunched over this desk, how tired she seems, how long it’s been since ray’s gotten to properly take care of her. he knows that she’s ahead. he knows that her deadlines aren’t pressing. she can afford to take tonight off.

    gerard reaches for the glass and brings it to her lips. her sips are slow, hesitant.

    Gerard is overworking herself again. Luckily, Ray knows how to get her out of her office and out of her head.
