Summary
The problem with the house where his father killed himself is that there’s nowhere to hide. Ted has thought about it a lot. As flat as a hotel bed sheet, the taut land conceals nothing until the blanket of corn fields, and if the house weren’t bad enough, there’s a massive white oak that towers above it, an arrow pointed straight up to God himself. A spotlight on over twenty acres of land.
Ted pulls out his phone and snaps a photo as Michelle turns out on to the long gravel road that leads to the house, the rumble of a mid-afternoon summer storm off in the distance like a great charcoal smear behind everything. He sends it to Trent, his last message thread pulled up, and wants to say something about how it’s funny how ominous the cloud coverage looks, because that’s how he feels when he comes back here, every time. How he feels like one of those sci-fi alien abduction movies when the UFO shines a light on you in the field and you get sucked right up. Nowhere to hide. He doesn’t, and instead taps out, This is where I sprang from the earth fully-formed 46 years ago.
