A few months after the events of the Eclipse Cannon's explosion, Agent Stone's life has settled into somewhat of a shaky, monotonous routine. Wake up, check on the nebulous state of his Doctor, open up the Mean Bean, wrestle with grief while maintaining a placid, smiling front for his customers for hours on end, close down the Mean Bean, check on the nebulous state of his Doctor, sleep.
Repeat.
Day in, day out.

Secret agents of the United States' military are expected to be calculating, efficient, and deadly. One such agent is a stalwart example of all this and more; time and time again.
So what happens when such an outstanding agent slips up for the first time in over a decade of service? Do you offer him a pat on the back, a "you'll get 'em next time, tiger!", or forgiveness?Of course not. You throw him to the most ruthless weapons contractor known to man, and hope he dies before he can disgrace your image further.

Post-Sonic 3, Stobotnik fix-it AU.
A few months ago, Shadow the Hedgehog miraculously re-appeared — with Dr. Ivo Robotnik in tow — after the two of them sacrificed themselves to save the Earth from the Eclipse Cannon's explosion. After such a forward confession of love from the Doctor during his final moments, Agent Stone finally bit the bullet and confessed his love to the other. The two quickly tied the knot and settled down... (Well. "Settled down" as best as two of the world's most brilliant, evil minds possibly could.)
One night, Ivo has trouble sleeping. Stone wakes up. The two of them simply... talk.

Summary
An unidentified assailant makes an attempt on Dr. Robotnik's life, and the ensuing scuffle leaves Agent Stone wounded in his stead.
With the assassin dealt with, the Doctor's life has been saved... but what about Stone? That aching wound will take time to heal, certainly, but surely that's the end of the matter, right? (Spoiler alert. It's not.)
