“I wonder what it would be like,” Dani whispers under her breath, carried by the soft breeze to Jamie’s ears. “To be out there, I mean. In the sky.”
“Lonely, I’d reckon,” Jamie answers, vocal cords taut and voice shaky. She tries to imagine it — looking into the vast emptiness where something so alive once was, and how it must feel to peer down over the edge of the universe.
Dani hums, acknowledging Jamie with something more to say. “I don’t think so,” she disagrees. “I think it’d be freeing. To be out there, in everything, just like that.”
“Well,” Jamie says warily, “looks like we’ll find out soon enough.”
