(Oh, good God. Of course something like this would happen at a party. Doesn’t stuff like this always happen at parties? People finding some spare room to hook up and probably never see each other again? See, this is why you should have stayed home.)

You’re partway through trying to figure out the subtlest way to slip out without getting caught when the lump in the bed moves, and you’re already stringing together the best apology you can manage when the blankets flip back. You’re stuttering something about how you’re leaving, you promise, you never saw anything, when a pair of dark blue eyes meets yours from across the bedroom.

    You freeze, chest going tight.

“Xavier? What are you doing here?”

    ———

Or: Sometimes it's worth it to hide in your coworker's room when a party gets too loud. Sometimes your other coworker—you know, the one you have a quietly raging crush on—is in there, too. And sometimes you have a… less than safe-for-work tabletop game to keep you company.

What's the worst that could happen, right?

The red in his cheeks is fading to a healthier pink, at least, and you feel brave enough, soft enough, to press your lips to his forehead, the sparkle of blue on his cheekbone. He shudders in his sleep, poor, beautiful boy, and you can’t help a quiet laugh as you thumb his hair out of his face. No, you’ll never, ever hurt him. You love him too much. You should tell him more often. You should tell him when he wakes up.

Your knuckles brush over his brow, smoothing out the furrow there, and you rest your hand on his neck, thumbing the line of his jaw. And this time, when he sighs, oh, his whole body seems to do it, so beautiful, so, oh, you could just

    Wait a minute.

    What day is it again?

Or: the universe really did something, making you ovulate on Ebb Day, of all days.

Tonight, by all measures, was a success. You wore the dress he bought for you, you smiled at him, and you danced with him. The tracker chip is secured. Soon enough the host of tonight's extravaganza will cease to be, and Sylus will get to see you and your fellow Hunters clean up the blood he leaves in his wake. A win-win-win all around.

Really—up until someone tries to assassinate him Sylus is having a great night.

You tip your head, tossing the pencil aside. You’ll keep eye contact, naturally. He’ll praise you more if you follow the rules, right?

“You’ll teach me,” you murmur, tossing the pencil aside your fingers making for the button of his pants. “Won’t you?”

Rafayel raises an eyebrow, but it doesn’t cover up the way his breath catches in his throat. “Of course,” he says, low, husky. So unlike him, and yet exactly who he’s always been. “I’ll teach you everything I know.”

    ———

Or: Rafayel was never talking about a pencil during that drawing lesson, and you know it.

You don’t know how to describe the look on Caleb’s face. It’s not disgusted, or even appalled. But it’s certainly not eager, either. You think you might catch a little restraint if you squint. But from what?

When he says your name it’s slow, and deliberate, and it thrums deep in your chest, in the pit of your heart. “What’re you saying, exactly?”

Your fingers curl into his blankets, nails snagging on the fabric. Bite. The bullet. “Look, I’m just saying—I’m saying that if. If I had to find out with somebody. You’d be that somebody. I guess. All right? Okay? Is that so awful?”

Or: Maybe you shouldn't have asked Caleb if he's still a virgin.
