Summary
Neal lied the way other people breathed: casually, efficiently, and often without conscious malice. He lied to get through doors, around questions, out of boring conversations and occasionally into better restaurants. He lied with his mouth and his posture and his clothes, with pauses designed to suggest honesty and smiles calibrated to seem spontaneous. Peter had spent years learning the difference between Neal lying because he was committing a felony and Neal lying because someone had asked whether he understood the concept of appropriate workplace boundaries.
What Peter had not yet worked out, and what would take him considerably longer than he was ever going to admit to Neal, was that Neal had different kinds of truth.
A missing boy, some revealing moments around Neal's misspent youth, and people growing as humans.
