    Jack wonders if it is punishment for his sins, for his father’s, grandfather’s, for the sins of all the pirates in the world. He cannot bear to leave these sins on this little boy, so new, innocent in the way only a newborn child could be. He leaves the boy with the Turners and only a first name – William. A name unassociated with Jack’s so that the past could not follow him, so that he could grow up with honest, good, respectable people in his family. Bill Turner promises to protect the boy, raise him as his own son. He leaves the family behind, hardens his heart to the world, and sets out to the open seas.

    He spends the next several years getting into hijinks, finding himself in precarious situations, stuff of the like. However, it all changes the day he arrives in Port Royal.
