The fact that Jimmy had been exiled kept ringing, clarion and electric, through Scott’s head for the rest of the evening. Exiled! He’d found someone else who hadn’t appreciated him. Another group that had taken him for granted. Scott contemplated going over to the Southlands to find Martyn, to tell him off for abandoning Jimmy like that, or maybe just to laugh about it. Exiled. Of course it would be Jimmy who ended up exiled from his own team. That was why Scott was lucky he had Pearl, who wouldn’t kick him out no matter what he did. Because they were best friends, and that was how that worked.

Summary
Pearl shows up at the entrance to the ranch half expecting Jimmy not even to open the gate and just shoot her from a distance. He doesn’t open the gate, but he doesn’t shoot her, just hangs back looking wary and uncomfortable. Pearl says, “I came to apologise, it’s not a trick.”
Jimmy doesn’t relax. “Right,” he says. “Apologise. Did you bring back the horse?”
It’s not even his horse. Truth be told, Pearl isn’t entirely sure whose horse it is in the first place. “I lost it,” she says, truthfully. The horse, that is; she lost the horse. She tells Jimmy, “I don’t actually want to bully you so you’ll like me more.”

It did make Jimmy feel a little bad, actually. He wouldn’t have minded letting Martyn stay in one of the other rooms, but Scott had insisted on not letting him out of their sight, and Jimmy couldn’t really fault the reasoning there. Letting Martyn crash on your couch (metaphorically, since Jimmy didn’t have a couch) for the night was one thing, but giving him what amounted to permission to run wild in your entire house was another thing entirely.
