    Bucky may be unsure of a great many things these days, but he knew only too well how Zemo could make his life easier - if he allowed it. Not all activation words clouded his mind equally. Not all protocols wiped clean the slate of his initial personality.

    Not all the hooks in his mind transformed him into a weapon.

    Alternatively: Hunting down Hydra alongside Zemo is a lot easier for Bucky than dealing with the tension between them. The empty gun in Zemo's mirror cabinet changes things.

    Bucky started to feel restless. His body was exhausted, still worn out from fucking Madripoor, but his mind refused to calm. There was always a baseline hum in the back of his head, rising and falling, but never quite silencing completely. He was angry, angry at how right Zemo was. Even now, he had so many things to say, so much bullshit clouding his brain that he wished would just stop.
