As the stars begin to flicker in the dark sky, the girl rises to her feet. The bottom of her skirt is caked in wet sand, but she does not seem to notice. “It’s time for me to go.”
The boy looks up at her, tracing the outline of her form in his memory. In the months that are to come, he does not ever want to forget her. “Farewell, Rosa,” he finally says.
Her eyes gleam with something wet — the sea within her, he thinks. “Farewell, Raven.”
She watches him slip into the sea.
She does not leave until his fins and tail vanish into the dark water.
