Seven years after their fuming breakup, Nick and Charlie run into each other unexpectedly and have one night together.

Charlie could still smell smoke and sea salt in his hair, their scents borne on the bitter cold wind, but underneath them, clinging to his skin, there was something different. There was the musky smell of sweat, as well as a combination of eucalyptus and citrus that used to be familiar. He could taste the whisky on his breath that he didn’t drink. His groggy mind worked slowly, but when the pieces finally fit together, he groaned, regret settling in his stomach like a heavy stone.
He really didn’t want to face the day, but he had to leave by noon, so he rolled over onto his back. He reached for his phone and sent a text.
