He looks at Kaveh, silhouetted against the stained glass window outside the Akademiya. Yes, he thinks. He would claw his heart out with his own hands for this man. He would serve it with chelow and smile as Kaveh sinks his teeth in. The pain is fine if it’s him. The pain is good if it’s him.
Awash in the pale blue light, he is unfathomably beautiful, so beautiful as to be an illusion. A trick of the last remaining Moon Sister. But then Alhaitham touches his shoulder (warm, solid, real), and Kaveh turns to him once more. He doesn’t smile, but he doesn’t frown, either.
Soulmates share matching marks, a gift given by the gods to those who are chosen for one another, but Alhaitham doesn’t believe in them, and Kaveh doesn’t have one.

“That’s excellent. Congratulations. You’re going to be exactly what Kshahrewar needs right now.”
Kaveh doesn’t accept the praise. “There’s a woman in Spantamad who’s starting her sabbatical soon,” he says instead of thank you.
This, too, you already knew. You stamped Zinat’s leave form; she told you she was going to Inazuma to study some kind of dangerous contamination on one of the islands. But what does Kaveh have to do with her?
“I’ve arranged to rent from her.”
Now this—this takes you by surprise. “Oh” is all you manage to say.
If you love him, let him go. If he comes back to you, he’ll be yours forever.
