“No!” It came out harsher than she had wanted it to and Percy flinched away, his arm retreating. She silently mourned the loss of the potential embrace, but soldiered on nonetheless. “That’s the problem with us, Percy. We-” Annabeth, usually articulate, stumbled over her words. She slammed her palm on the counter and tried again, this time with a more level tone. “I guess you’re right, I don’t have to tell you anything, Perce, but I want to. And if we’re going to last, we have to want to tell each other things.”

Percy laid down, rolling to face the wall with his back to her. He didn’t know why it unnerved him so much, it wasn’t like they’d never slept in the same room before. Still, the silence wasn’t helping matters much.
Annabeth clicked off the lamp, shrouding the room in total darkness with only a slim line of light coming in above the curtains. If he could just keep his eyes closed for long enough, he’d have to fall asleep, right?

Percy waits a few seconds, feet tapping impatiently against the tiled floor of their kitchen. Finally, his phone connects with the bluetooth speaker Piper had given him for his last birthday, something expensive that Percy and Annabeth wouldn’t have even thought of buying if it had been up to them. “Something like dancing.”
