    Summary

A year and a half after the Crossroads, Derek's still got a head full of semi-infinite knowledge, but little by little, with Avery's help, he's healing.

Time to go outside and touch some grass.

    Bookmarker's Notes

    This is a good day. A forearm-crutches-instead-of-wheelchair day. A one-ibuprofen-instead-of-sumatriptan day. A go-touch-grass-for-real day.

A year after the Crossroads, days like this are getting more and more common.

    "How's the island?"

Avery makes a face. "Perfect except the tarantulas."

Derek has literally never played Animal Crossing. It's only been since meeting Avery that he's learned anything meaningful about the game. While he could recite from memory the binary code that makes Tom Nook exist, there's a special charm to meeting the islanders for real.

    "Did a tarantula kill you?"

"You don't die in Animal Crossing, we've been over this."

    "So...did it?"

    "...Yeah."

Derek pats Avery's knee comfortingly. "Better luck next time."

    Summary

Athena sighs. Kind of embarrassing, really: the Turnabout Terror and the city’s chief prosecutor, legal legends, unable to make even the most basic logical leap and figure out that they’re this deeply in love with each other.

She glances back over at Apollo, whose head is tipped back, staring at the smoggy sky. He’s never been one for getting involved in these sorts of things, but honestly, Athena is just about nearing her limit with Mr. Wright and Mr. Edgeworth.

    This requires an intervention.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Mr. Edgeworth takes one more step in, thumb brushing over Mr. Wright’s lips. Athena is on the verge of blacking out. They know they’re in public, right? Surely?

Mr. Wright and Apollo both look paralyzed, for vastly different reasons. Mr. Edgeworth leans infinitesimally closer, smirking. Athena honestly isn’t sure if the whole scene in front of her is playing in slow motion. Maybe her metabolic rate has increased, to helpfully speed her further towards death.

Apollo shoots Athena a frantic look. Mr. Wright and Mr. Edgeworth still haven’t pulled apart, but they haven’t got any closer, either, which is… good?

“You’re seeing this too, right?” Athena says.

    “Apparently,” Klavier replies.

“Oh God, are we hallucinating? This might be a folie à deux.” She catches sight of some paralegal cringing away from the spectacle, which is, again, in the middle of the lobby. “Wait, scratch that, it’s a folie à la entire Los Angeles County legal district.”

Mr. Edgeworth is still physically touching Mr. Wright’s mouth, in the middle of a Friday afternoon. Athena can hear their hearts pounding, and every ragged beat sounds like her death knell.

“I’m in hell,” she says brightly.

Apollo has apparently, finally had enough. “Mr. Wright!” he shouts. Everyone in a ten-metre radius jumps out of their skin—apart from Mr. Wright and Mr. Edgeworth, who detangle as though nothing happened.

“Yes, Apollo?” Mr. Wright says. He’s acting very normal for someone who’s just had his lips caressed by his not-partner—his heart rate is still somewhere between ‘frenzied tap dancer’ and ‘metronome on crack,’ but he’s suppressing his reaction incredibly well. So is Mr. Edgeworth, for that matter. This is probably better for everyone.

“Pirozhkis are savoury,” Trey tells him and starts pulling out ingredients like it’s not about to make a new mess. Cater resigns himself to his janitorial fate. Then he processes Trey’s words and frowns.

    “What, like, unsweet?”

“That’s what savoury means, yeah,” he says with a laugh. “After all, you don’t like sweets, do you?”

    What the fuck?

    ——

i will forever be indignant that they cut out my precious character development tart scene out of the anime so this is a missing scene fic: trey and cater clean together and talk and hold each other a little bit accountable, maybe.

    Bookmarker's Notes

“When Riddle’s mother marched over to our house and scolded us for five hours straight, I couldn’t take it,” he says conversationally as the kitchen starts smelling of garlic and onions in oil. “I don’t know how Riddle is still trying, still working this hard. I just couldn’t do it to him. Scolding him for making people follow the rules—I mean, isn’t that weird?”

Cater throws the dough in a bowl with muted disgust about the grease now worked into his hands and goes to wash them. He got flour on his shirt, too. “I guess, but… was Riddle’s mom the devil incarnate, or something? I feel like lecturing an entire grown ass family about something as innocent as hanging out is… clinically insane? Literally evil, even?”

“That’s a little extreme,” Trey defends, but the argument is weak. “She’s a respected figure in the community.”

Cater eyes him as he stirs ground beef around the pan. It smells incredible, but the warmth of the steam is almost more attractive as the kitchen gets colder. “Mmn. Well, I’m sure she’s otherwise lovely, then.”

    Summary

She wonders again: what would it be like to drown? If she killed herself and became someone else, would anyone notice? Shu might point and say: Alien imposter. The perfumed letters she keeps hidden within her desk might say: You are no longer the girl that I loved. Or, he might say: You've bloomed.
