“It was violent. Just like him. Exactly how he does it,” he says, his voice unbelievably small, like he’s disappointed in himself. Which is strange, because Mike has never felt more proud of anyone in his entire life.
“You would never hurt even a fly,” Mike says. “I know you wouldn’t even hurt those monsters if you didn’t have to. You’re different. I've known you for as long as I remember being alive, Will.” His voice softens even more, like he needs Will to hear it, to believe it, because he means every word.

His attention darts from one friend to another, landing on Lucas then Dustin then Robin. But never Mike. He hasn’t looked Mike’s way once since the truck started moving.
Mike is trying really, really hard not to be bothered by that.

“Hey,” Mike says, and he knows his voice sounds terribly soft. Normally his words have a tendency of coming out whiny and petulant, far more so than he would like, but never with Will. Even when he’s upset, hurt, confused, confused, confused like he is right now, he can never sound anything other than embarrassingly fond.

Mike slides one of his hands around to cup the back of Will’s neck, resting his fingers right over the spot where he knows Will always feels the connection to Vecna, covering it like he’s been yearning to for years. Like he can offer some thin protection by doing so.

“In case it wasn’t clear,” Mike wants to look away, embarrassment fluttering through him, but he forces himself to meet Will’s gaze because Will deserves that, “I actually do like you back. I maybe more than like you. Sorry for the confusion.” When Will laughs it is a beautiful thing.
