"What's this?" Chan asks. "Did you buy me a house?" They aren't house keys though. They're for something smaller.
Felix smiles as he pushes at the covers pulled up to his neck. Down past his chest, his hips, his feet. Chan gets distracted by the nightgown he's wearing before he realizes what Felix is showing him: a thin silver chain, looped and locked around his ankle.
"What," Chris says, sitting up straight. The chain is maybe half an inch wide and light in his hand. But when he wraps it once, twice around his palm and pulls, there's no give. He traces the taut line under the corner of his blanket and finds it fixed to his bedpost, attached with a matching padlock.
"Happy birthday," Felix says when Chan looks back at him.
