Summary
A dark realization was curling in his mind. Tar-Míriel was dead. He would never talk to her again. Never see her elusive smile again. Never hear him threaten his position again. She was lost to him, like his sons, Valendil and Isildur. Like his wife. And just like them, he wasn’t able to do anything to save her. But as that thought came to him, Elendil flexed his jaw, praying to the Valar. They could not take her from him.
“Please!” Elendil whispered an angry prayer, “Take me, take me instead!”

“I am chosen by the Valar,” she whispered, a mirthless laugh leaving her lips.
At her words, Elendil's hold on her hands tightened, "They did," he breathed, "You have faced The Trial by Abyss, and passed the judgment of the Valar."
Míriel felt the lightest touch of Elendil's finger on her face, wiping at the tears. Brushing an unruly strand of hair.
"The Valar protect you Míriel,” he breathed again, his touch against her cheek tantalizing.

Summary
Something had grown between her and the Captain of the Sea Guard. It had started as a mutual understanding. Then it was a loss, the loss of the battle. The loss of their loved ones. Elendil was the only one who seemed to understand the keen pain of grief. The only person she could rely on during these tempestuous times.
Yet, somehow something had shifted between them, though neither of them spoke of it. Though she didn't know if Elendil felt it as she did. She found herself longing for his calming and steadfast presence, till he was constantly at her side. As if it were the requirements of his duty, though no previous monarch of Númenor had required the presence of the Captain of the Sea Guard to fulfill their duties.
She couldn't lose Elendil, Númenor needed him. Maybe more than they needed her. And she needed him, maybe more than she should.

Summary
Glancing around uneasily to make sure that no eyes were upon them, Elendil led the Queen to an alcove. Sufficiently trapping her in the corner, blocking her from any eyes that would dare pry.
“You should not be here,” Elendil snapped firmly, glancing around nervously.
In the back of his mind, he knew how it sounded, how it looked. Like they had taken each other as lovers. Knew that was the rumour that had been whispered by most. And her here was perhaps the most damming thing of all.
But the Queen didn’t seem to care, her hands curling around his forearms, dragging his gaze back to her. He took in her brown eyes, the sorrow and compassion that was simmering in them, "I heard about Valendil... Elendil I'm-"

But there is selfishness in that request. It's for Númenor she tells herself. For the Captain as well. She knew her Cousin, and her nephew the same. Knew of the things that they could be capable of if pushed. She also knew of her Captain and knew his loyalty and faith came at a steep price.
But the Queen also knew that she would hardly be able to survive this, not without her Captain. He was her bastion in this time of turmoil, her beacon in roiling waters. She needed him.
