“What are you drawing?”
Richie jumped about five feet in the air and slammed his hand onto his sketchbook, (debatably) hiding his drawings from view. When he looked up, there was a suit-clad man with his hands in his pockets and an awkward smile on his face.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you, I thought you heard me coming.”“I-its fine.” Richie immediately responded, avoiding eye contact. A thick silence fell over the pair.
“So… What are you drawing?” The man asked again.

Paul tried to make it a nice experience. He’d learned what questions to ask that would get Richie talking, which usually resulted in him rambling about the latest cartoon—or, as Richie would prefer he refer to it, the latest anime—he was into. He got enjoyment from that, and Paul got enjoyment from not having to do all the taking. He was never much for conversation.
A few years ago, when Beanie’s opened, Paul started bringing Richie there on the way to school. He insisted that it was so that both of them could get a pick-me-up early in the day, so Richie would be awake and alert by the time his first class started. Paul was sure Richie had accepted that explanation.
Until one Friday, in late September of Richie’s senior year of high school.
__OR: On the way to school, Paul takes Richie to Beanie’s, where they discuss the former’s feelings for the crabby barista.
A week later, Paul grapples with his memories of the last conversation he and his nephew had.
