Summary
Ushijima didn't have any friends, so when nobody came to his birthday party, he feels like he shouldn't be surprised. He is, however, surprised when Oikawa comes as the only guest and the two boys start to become friends from then on.
And every year, Ushijima and Oikawa spend his birthday together, even though they're on different volleyball teams and even though Oikawa seems to hate him. Because it's the only day they can pretend everything is fine between them.

Oikawa consists of contradictions. He says one thing and does the other. Like telling all their teammates Ushijima was thick-headed and not even pretty, but kissing him silly in the restroom.

Summary
Oikawa touched Ushijima’s shoulder, lingering. “You wouldn’t laugh at me if I did something stupid, would you, Ushiwaka?”
There was a low lurch deep in Ushijima’s gut. “Of course not.”
Oikawa nodded, more to himself than Ushijima. “I’m about to do something stupid, then. Stop me, if you want.” He took another step closer, and Ushijima’s field of vision was only Oikawa.
The light touch on Ushijima’s jaw grew firmer as Oikawa’s hand settled. The other one rose to match it, cupping the other side of Ushijima’s face. Oikawa’s palms were warm. So was his breath, as it fanned across Ushijima’s lips.
“Anytime,” said Oikawa, his voice so low it was nearly a whisper. “Stop me anytime.”
Ushijima didn’t.

Summary
Not that there’s any use in ever arguing with Oikawa, even if he’s in the wrong. That much Ushijima discovers quickly; he discovers just as quickly that he likes to do it anyway, just to see the crease in Oikawa’s brow, the curl of his lip, the frantic wording of his double, triple, quadruple texts when Ushijima doesn’t message him back. It’s been so long that Oikawa has made a game out of teasing Ushijima that he hasn’t quite realized the street goes both ways.
Ushijima discovers that he likes teasing Oikawa almost as much as Oikawa likes teasing him.

“Surprise engagement party!” Sugawara explains, “Well, a mini-party, to celebrate you and Ushiwaka finally making it official!”
Startled, Oikawa chokes on nothing, sputtering his words until he can finally formulate his oh-so-elegant rebuttal, “Ushiwaka and I aren’t engaged, what the fuck?”
Oikawa is surprised to be thrown an engagement party. His friends are more surprised to find out that Oikawa is not actually engaged.
