    Summary

“My apartment,” he says, keeping his tone deliberately even. Casual. “I mean… it’s close by, right? You could stay there instead of dealing with the hotel nonsense.”

The words hang in the air between them, fragile and irrevocable. Rozanov goes very still.

Shane feels a flash of panic—wonders if he’s misjudged, if he’s pushed too hard and too fast. He rushes to fill the silence, almost tripping over the words, trying to frame it the way he rehearsed in his head.

“It’s more practical, right?” He adds. “Less media. No teammates. You’d have your own space. And it’s only until flights start up again. You can leave first thing when they resume.”

--- After Rose, after Florida, but having barely reconciled since, Shane and Ilya are stuck in Montreal during a snow storm. Shane offers for Ilya to stay in his apartment, and offers up the rest of his heart with it. Or, an alternate take on what happens after Episode 4.

In the quiet of night, twenty minutes after Darya turned twelve, her mother hands her a present with a blank name slip.

“Should call you the Ottawa Puppies,” says the Toronto centre, Svensson. As an insult it makes no sense, so Ilya ignores it, until he continues, “Hear Hollander keeps you on a short leash.”

Ilya is the captain, so if anything, he should be holding the leash. In English, you can be singular or plural, but he knows what Svensson is trying to say. He is saying Ilya Rozanov, you are Hollander’s bitch.

“Only sometimes,” Ilya replies, grinning. He wins the face off.

OR: Ilya trains himself to be a very, very good guard dog for Shane.

    Summary

It’s been almost three years since the last time they played against each other. Not an exhibition, not a ceremonial puck drop or a smiling photo op. A real game, with real skates and real contact. Shane could swear, right now, that if he closes his eyes he’d remember the crack of sticks, the echo of blades against ice, the roar of the crowd rising and falling like a living thing. He won’t even have to try hard. It’s always there in the back of his mind. The way Ilya skated across the rink, visor fogged slightly, mouthguard half out of his mouth in that familiar, infuriating way.

Three years is nothing in the grand scheme of things. Three years is also an eternity. Long enough for routines to change and for habits to calcify like bone. For absence to become a kind of presence all on its own.

--- In which Shane and Ilya break up in 2017, after Florida. It's 2029, and both have retired and put the game behind them. An invitation to a charity event sets things in motion. Or, another alternate take on what happens after Episode 4.

    Summary

“Ilya Rozanov,” Shane repeats slowly, letting himself taste the words. He grins. “Wow. You’re, like, a really good player. How come you’re in Canada for summer camp? Is that weird to ask? Sorry if that’s weird. I just meant-”

Shane is cut off by a hand on his mouth. He flushes.

“Too fast,” Ilya says. “My English… not good.”

“Sorry,” Shane mumbles into Ilya’s hand. Ilya grins and shakes his head, curls dancing, as he pulls his hand away.

    “Is okay. Slow words. Okay?”

This year marks thirteen year Shane Hollander's third summer at Coach Marakov's elite hockey training camp. In attendance for the first time: Ilya Rozanov, visiting from Russia. Shane isn't the most sociable, and Ilya's English isn't the greatest, yet the unlikely duo soon become the best of friends.

It's just one summer, but it makes a world of difference.
