Affection and yearning coil like a mass of vines through Dani’s chest as she thinks, in awe, about how incapable they are of hurting anyone.

Dani looks up from where she has her head in Jamie's lap, catching the hazel eyes bearing down on her with such an open softness that she feels her own chest compress in response.
"It is, but—" She reaches up, tangles her fingers gently around the chain hanging from Jamie's neck, if only to have something to do, something to hang onto, "—it doesn't feel that heavy now."
Dani watches, lips parting in surprise, as Jamie takes the hand hovering over her chest in her own and presses it against her sternum; she can feel the way Jamie's heart is pounding just beneath it, thunderous, through the heel of her palm.
"I'll carry this piece with you," Jamie promises into the air between them. "Her piece. Your piece. Let me feel it for the both of us."

Summary
Dani has always been drawn to the underdog. The kids that don’t have the confidence or the means to fit in, to make friends, the kids who have been through something and need someone to lean on. It’s something Jamie has always gently teased her about - "sussed me out immediately, Poppins," - and it takes her back to her days before Bly, working with grieving children, children thrown into a new place where they didn’t know the language, children who couldn’t quite adjust to the expectations placed on them.
Something about Clare is more personal, though.
Clare reminds her of Jamie.
