Lenore stood up, her chest swelling with the feeling of superiority to her now ex-fiance, she laughed again, almost as if it were in his face, “Now that wasn’t so hard was it!” she gloated to no one in particular, only receiving the crow of a raven in response.
Then, the wind began to pick up, and Lenore spared a look over her shoulder. Perched on every bare branch that surrounded the clearing, she found herself an audience of hundreds, perhaps thousands, of cawing ravens staring intently at her. Had they always been there? The ebony feathered bird's volume continued to increase, ceasing Lenore's temptation to bow out of pure sardonic whim for her unexpected audience. Hearing a twig snap behind her, Lenore tensed, but before she could even turn to see where it had come from, something; or rather, someone, had grabbed her hand.

If she’s being honest with herself, the real problem is that every time she looks at those pink stripes, she’s back to that night in December, Joel’s sharp words ringing in her ears, sure as hell ain’t your dad, come dawn we’re going our separate ways, sitting on that window seat with her knees hugged to her chest for hours afterwards, staring at the wallpaper and waiting and waiting and waiting for him to come back and tell her that he changed his mind, that he’s not leaving her.
She knows how the story ends, she knows that even though he never apologized, he did wait for her, he didn’t leave her, but those stupid pink walls keep reminding her that everyone leaves her eventually.

When emergency home repairs kick Ellie and Joel out of their house in Jackson, they temporarily move in with Tommy and Maria. One could say it's a full house. (Featuring Miller Family Bonding and Ellie's abandonment issues and a nonzero amount of Lord of the Rings references.)

And both would take advantage of that opportunity. The story of how "Leo" managed to win a game against the unbeatable queen.

"So... what's the next step?" Lenore asked, stroking her knuckles.
"Thanks to the bet on my hand, it's something relatively simple: if you beat me in a game of chess, you become my fiancée," Annabel stroked her chin, Lenore kissed her hand, "we could choreograph a game of memorized moves."
Lenore stood, her eyes lost somewhere in the room. Then she looked at Annabel, who had taken a seat on the edge of the mattress.

“Do a trick.”
She blinks, more than slightly startled, her struggle ceasing for a moment under the force of her bewilderment. In her defense, she’s still being held by a hand that feels like it could snap her wrist like a twig just by squeezing too hard, so she thinks she has a right to be a little confused.
Also the words make no goddamn sense.
“What?” She asks blankly, giving another testing tug against the hold. No dice. His grip doesn’t go tighter, but neither is he anywhere close to letting go.
“You’re out here doing magic and shit so you can steal from the crowd, right? Do some magic if you want the money.”
She gives him an incredulous look.
“Dude, I just tried to,” she’s suddenly aware that they are in public and that she and Riley will likely need this section of the park in the future, “rob you,” she says in a low hiss. “And now what? You want a fucking show?”
“You want the money? You ain’t stealing it from me. Do a trick and earn it, fair and square.”
