Summary
The large display in the area for fans shows a joyful Max, who has won yet again, together with an equally delighted Kelly. She embraces him and kisses through the safety glass. Someone nearby applauds. The camera zooms in, allowing everyone to witness the romantic scene closely. Holding onto the mesh, Charles tightens his grip on the thin wires, leaving noticeable horizontal indentations. He wants to say something hurtful but spotted fans recording him from behind. Instead, he keeps his gaze on the large screen.
Someone whispers "Wow, he's handsome" and Charles can barely stop himself from turning to the fans and shouting that their favorite Dutchman also holds other men by the waist and pulls them to him in the same way to fuck in a faceless hotel room where they have come in turns, fifteen minutes apart, so that no one sees.

"They don’t talk - never have. It’s funny, Max thought. They’ve been racing together for years - decades even. Yet outside of the paddock they’re barely more than strangers. Chatting together during interviews - sharing meaningful (or meaningless, Max considers) looks. It’s not like he minds it per se, Max thinks to himself, it’s just a bit funny. He loves to race the dude - loves beating him more accurately - but a friendship never came of it."
Set during the ’21 season, in which Max is fighting for the championship, Charles is suffering at the hands of Ferrari, and where two rivals become something more than either had ever anticipated. After all - they had never talked outside of the paddock before.

"Fuck," Charles blurted out, squeezing the leafleat in his hands.
